About the Solfa piano tool
The Solfa online piano is a small, focused practice instrument that runs entirely in your web browser. It exists for one reason: to give anyone — a beginner picking up music theory for the first time, a producer who knows what sounds good but not why, or a student who needs a quick reference keyboard — a fast way to hear and see how notes relate to each other.
Most online pianos are either cluttered with recording features you'll never use, or they are so minimal that you can't learn anything from them. Solfa sits in the middle. It gives you two full octaves of a real piano layout, keyboard input so you can play with both hands on your computer, an octave selector, and a sustain toggle.
How to use the piano tool
Click any white or black key with your mouse or trackpad to hear that note. If you'd rather play with your computer keyboard, the home row keys — A, S, D, F, G, H, J, K — map to the white keys of the current octave, and the row above — W, E, T, Y, U — maps to the black keys.
If you're working with a melody that sits outside the default range, use the Octave dropdown to shift the whole keyboard up or down. Octave 3 is the default; octave 4 puts you in the range most vocal melodies sit in, and octave 2 is useful for bass lines.
The Sustain toggle changes how long a note rings after you release it. With sustain off, each note decays quickly — good for practicing scales. With sustain on, notes ring longer, closer to how a piano pedal behaves.
What you'll learn by playing
- Whole steps and half steps — the distance between E and F, or B and C, is a half step with no black key between them.
- Octaves — the same note name repeats every 12 keys. Play a C, then the C twelve keys to its right.
- Intervals — a major third, a perfect fifth, an octave. Each has a distinct character.
- Chords — press three keys at once and you have a chord. The piano makes chord construction physical.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Solfa piano really free?
Yes. Solfa is free to use and always will be for the core tools. There's no premium tier, no signup, no trial period. The site is supported by advertising.
Do I need any software or plugins installed?
No. Solfa runs on the Web Audio API through the Tone.js library, built into every modern browser. Sound only starts after your first interaction, which is a browser requirement.
Why does the sound not start automatically?
Modern browsers block audio from playing until the user interacts with the page. The first time you click a key, the audio engine starts and stays on for the rest of your session.
Can I use this on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The piano is responsive and works on touch screens. On smaller screens you'll need to scroll horizontally to reach all keys.
Can I play chords on this piano?
Yes. Press multiple keys at once. If you want to explore chord construction more directly, try the Chords & Scales tool.
Where to go next
Once you're comfortable playing single notes, head to the Chords & Scales tool, or jump to the Beat Maker if you'd rather start from rhythm.
